Exploring Local Thailand Biomass Wood Pellet Raw Materials

Nov. 26, 2024

Thailand, with its robust agricultural and forestry sectors, offers a wide range of biomass raw materials ideal for pellet production. As the country pursues more sustainable energy solutions, biomass pellet production has become increasingly attractive. The main raw materials for biomass pellets in Thailand include agricultural residues, energy crops, and wood waste.

1.Agricultural residues: As a major agricultural country, Thailand often uses agricultural residues such as rice husks, straw, corn cobs, etc. as raw materials for burning pellets. The remaining parts of these crops are usually produced after the end of the agricultural season and become potential sources of biomass energy

2.Energy crops: Some regions in Thailand have planted energy crops such as energy cane and energy palm, some of which can be used to produce biomass pellets.

3. Wood waste: Waste generated during wood processing, such as sawdust, wood bark, etc., can also be used as raw materials for biomass pellets. These wastes usually accumulate in large quantities during industrial production processes.

4. Corn stover: Blackwood Technology B.V., a leading Dutch developer of roasting and carbonization technology, has announced the successful launch of the first commercial FlashTor black pellet plant in the province of Lampang, Thailand. This commercial factory located in South Bang Province is owned and operated by NT Biomass Products Co Ltd. (NTBC), a wholly-owned subsidiary of TTCL Public Co Ltd (TTCL), and will produce 75000 tons of black pellets annually. The factory will use corn stover and woody biomass as the main biomass raw materials, and black particles will be used for power generation and to replace coal in steel production. Black particles provide a huge business opportunity, not only for TTCL, but also for all stakeholders in the black particle supply chain, from raw material suppliers to product buyers. Using corn residue as a raw material source provides local farmers with an additional source of income from selling corn residue. Chamnarn Atsanatam, Vice President of TTCL Energy Business Unit, commented that for buyers, black particles can allow them to replace fossil coal with green alternatives while using existing infrastructure.
